What Is Mind-Body Medicine (MBM)?

Short Definition of Mind-Body Medicine

MBM is a scientific system and clinical practice that achieve mental, physical and spiritual health by balancing and connecting the mind, body and spirit as one unified life unit. Mind-Body Medicine originated from a profound traditional medicine. It developed over thousands of years ago and is widely used in modern times. This is a short definition by the Mind-Body Medical University. It's profound meaning and principle cannot be defined with one or two sentences. Please read on for more discussion about MBM.

So far there is no classical or official definition about Mind-Body Medicine. Simi-definition about Mind-Body Medicine is what U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) provided about Mind-Body interventions, but not about Mind-Body Medicine. The definition is like this:

Mind–body interventions is the name of a U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) classification that covers a variety of techniques designed to enhance the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms. Some of these are techniques that were once considered to be complementary or alternative medicine but have now become mainstream (for example, patient support groups and cognitive-behavioral therapy). Other mind-body techniques are still considered complementary or alternative medicine, including meditation, prayer, mental healing, movement re-education, and therapies that use creative outlets such as art, music, or dance.[1]

This definition revealed the correlation between mind and body as a phenomenon by the term itself and classified some techniques (but not all) into the Mind-Body Intervention practice. The term itself, however, does not define Mind-Body Medicine as an independent standalone scientific system of medicine or healing technology, and nor it does reveal the most important principle, essence and mechanism of entire system of Mind-Body Medicine. In other words, it is about the mind–body intervention phenomenon, but not about Mind-Body Medicine's principle, mechanism, techniques, and complete scientific and technology system.

As more practitioners and scientists research, practice and understand about Mind-Body Medicine, the definition and explanation may vary over the times. Here we use the following definition and explanation taught at the Mind-Body Medical University (MBMU) to define Mind-Body Medicine. For detailed teaching and actual practice, join MBMU's students and professors' school course work, you will learn and actually gain the knowledge. The following are some concepts to explain about MBM.

Long Definition / Description about Mind-Body Medicine

1. Objects of MBM - Mind, Body, Spirit

Mind-Body Medicine (MBM) is a complete and profound scientific and technology system of healing and self-healing, therapeutic medicine and preventive medicine, physical exercise and mental and spiritual cultivation practice for the whole being of mind, body and spirit. This system deals with the fundamental life origin or essence. Its application brings benefits to all levels of the life. MBM directly accesses the fundamental life origin/essence, SPIRIT at energetically highest level. The SPIRIT carries on and leads up to the human MIND as the second level of life component. The MIND connects to biological BODY in the physical dimension at the lowest level of energy.

In MBM it is roughly considered that the life structure has these three components as described above. In principle and technically, however, it deals with much more fantastically delicate multiple levels from macroscopic levels, through microscopic, cellular, molecular level, then subatomic particles, composite particles, elementary/fundamental particles such as quarks, leptons and gauge bosons's levels, till the most fundamental origin of living substances. Therefore the Life Structure or Anatomy of Life in Mind-Body Medicine is much complicated system that is composed from multiple levels of components; from SPIRIT through the MIND and finally come to the physical BODY. The physical body treated by modern conventional medicine is only the very small and superficial part of the life.

Energy Connecting and Supporting The Whole Being of Spirit, Mind, Body

MBM considers vibration as live's common phenomena. The energy produced during the process of vibration is considered as as life's common character. With these two concepts MBM connects and integrates all levels of life into one unified unit. The life vibrations occur at all levels and energy produced at all levels. The energy is life's vitality, is the spirit of life, that is, the quantum particles or fundamental particles which can transport across multiple levels, therefore unifying, blanching, nursing and nurturing the life to live in healthy condition.

Energy Practice is the Key in MBM

Disease, disease discomfort is caused by blocks of energy flow or lacking or low level of energy at any level(s) possible, such as the mind, body and spirit. Therefore, the entire healing and health practice in MBM is energy practice. All techniques in MBM are for the purpose of improving the quality, purity, amount or level, balanced status, and flows of energy. At this meaning MBM is also called Energy Medicine. Because the energy involve quantum particles and supper microscopic level vibration energy, quantum energy, so it is also sometimes called Quantum Medicine.

The typical example is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which uses very delicate energy system called Meridian System, a well-established network system of energy flows within the mind, body and spirit to deal with all issues about life and health. Other types of MBM practices such as naturopathic medicine, Indian medicine, Yoga, Qigong, Taiji / Taichi, herbs, chiropractic, massage, hypnosis, meditation, psychological conversation and consultation, ... all are for the same purpose but in different forms and sometimes at different levels or for meeting different needs or conditions of the person.

Energy is in the Spiritual Dimension and Requires Cultivation of Mind, Body and Spirit

The energy is not at surface or physical level, it's why all these MBM practices or techniques are difficult to learn and understand. It is not visible, and some of them are even not relying on physical form or completely have no physical form. MBM study and practice require combinations of spiritual belief, intellectual understanding, inborn sense, pure mind and calm mentality to feel, to experience, to understand, to practice, and then repeat all these over and over.

However often the acquired learning, education, experience at the material life, rigid logical mentality or thinking mood or hobbits, human notions, ... all these can lock the mind on the physical dimension and not allow you to reach the high energetic spiritual dimension. As result the result or quality of energy practice in MBM requires spiritual cultivation, mindful practice, psychological self-recognition, spiritual enlightenment, meditation, calm down the busy mind, focusing on true spirit/soul, letting go human attachments, and more; all these practices are for reaching the pure and high level of energetic dimensions. Therefore at this meaning, MBM is also called Spiritual Healing, Spiritual Medicine.

From all these, it is not difficult to understand why the same herb, same acupuncture needle, the same technique, same teacher trained different students, the healing results are different. Some one does better and someone does not. Because each MBM doctor has different level of energy practice even though they learned the same technique in the physical form.

Modern Medicine Deals up to Molecular Level but Does not Reach Fundamental Particle Level

MBM starts from highest energy level, elementary particles to physical level, and use energy in different forms to heal that person. But modern medicine deals the physical body up to the molecular level, but nothing beyond that. Because the mental and physical diseases caused at much higher energy level, so the medication does not reach there to heal the cause from the root although it does actually improve some conditions at physical levels, but eventually the problem either comes back or the original energy problem moves other place and caused other problems. MBM does not have this problem because it directly reach the high energy level to heal the cause and as result the symptoms are also eliminated.

MBM History - Initialed at the Ancient Time

MBM was initialed at the ancient time by mysterious divine power and wisdom that influenced, enlightened and transmitted to human forefathers who blessedly obtained this GIFT for human healing, self-healing, health and mind-body-spirit cultivation.

At that time there was no such a name like Mind-Body Medicine. MBM is a modern term created by natural healing practitioners at modern time based on the nature of this healing and health system. Since MBM deals with the mind, body and spirit at the same time at multiple levels, it indeed should be named as Mind-Body-Spirit Medicine. But for short and just as a term, Mind-Body Medicine is commonly used by the professionals in the field at modern time. Here we formally defined the Mind-Body Medicine, but the actual meaning is Mind-Body-Spirit Medicine.

Totally Different System from Conventional Medicine

MBM is totally independent from modern conventional medical system. It is based on totally different principles, and uses totally different concepts, treatment subjects, terminology, ideology, procedures, tools, materials, descriptions, expressions, methodology and technology to deal with the health issue, diseases, discomforts, feelings, emotions, consciousness, thoughts, phenomena, meaning and essence of lives. It is a totally wrong way to describe, explain, learn and practice MBM using the understanding, knowledge, notions, terminology and technologies of modern conventional medicine and other modern sciences although sometimes modern science and techniques can reflect some superficial phenomena of MBM's healing processes and results, helping understand MBM better to certain extent.

MBM's Nature and Advantages:

MBMU follows the principles of original medicine, Traditional Chinese / Oriental Medicine, natural medicine, holistic medicine, mind-body medicine, holistic psychology, traditional healing arts or other alternative and complementary medicine modalities that focus on the mind-body connection as key principle to heal diseases, promote and maintain health.

These healing sciences and practices have so many fundamental beneficial principles and natures that conventional medicine does not have, and yet they are especially needed at modern time.
